Directions For Casting
Best casting results are obtained if a little extra care and attention is given to preparing the slip properly before beginning to cast.
The slip should be stirred thoroughly and strained with a wire mesh strainer or screen into a spouted container. In pouring small items, the slip should be thinned slightly. Make sure that a the mold you plan to pour is free from any particles of clay or other foreign material and that it is securely banded. Pour slip into mold in a steady steam, slowly, until it is filled. As the water is absorbed into the mold from the slip, the level will recede....test the thickness of the slip in the pour hole and when it is approximately 1/16th of an inch (it can be slightly thicker on the larger student molds) turn mold over at an angle and allow slip to drain out in a steady stream. When slip has drained out, rest mold with pour hole down on a couple of small pieces of wood such as lath or something similar. In approximately 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the weather conditions which affect casting conditions, the casting may be removed from the mold. The excess clay from the pour hole can be removed with a trimming knife before or after removing casting from the mold. Allow to dry at room temperature. Casting slip and supplies can be purchased from your local ceramic hobby shop.
